What should be a spray gun for water-dispersion paint?

Paint Sprayer Information

Types of sprayers

When choosing the type of tool, it is necessary to take into account the area of the treated surface. Powerful pneumatic or electric spray guns for water-based paint are more often used by professional painters with large volumes of work. Piston hand sprayers are more suitable for home use.

Manual (mechanical)

Inexpensive tools with a simple design, outwardly resemble old-style automobile pumps. The paint is pumped into them using a piston driven manually. The simplest manual paint sprayer consists of the following parts and assemblies:

  • the housing is in the form of a cylinder, inside which there are 2 valves, the first for pumping air, the second for taking paint;
  • a piston pump enclosed in a cylinder;
  • handles in the form of the letter " T " for manual air injection;
  • a spray gun (pistol) with a trigger, to which 2 hoses are connected: a pressure one that supplies compressed air, and a suction one for collecting paint; the latter is equipped with a filter for detaining solid particles;
  • paint tank;
  • fishing rods with adjustable length, to which the sprayer is attached.

This spray gun is quite suitable for water-based acrylic paint. To adjust the solution supply, a special screw is provided on the needle valve of the sprayer. You will have to adapt to such a tool. It will be necessary to determine the pumping speed and the force of the jet experimentally.

Electric

Their power can be different. Portable compact devices have minimal weight and low performance. The weight of the device without paint is only 1.4-2.5 kg.

The air in them is pumped not manually, but with the help of an electric pump. The rotating head of the spray gun has been replaced by a nozzle. Paint sprayers for water-based paint with a built-in capacity of 0.6-1.3 liters are used for work at home. More powerful models with a capacity of 240-250 sq. m. m per hour are equipped with remote pumps and hoses for connecting tanks. The disadvantages include increased noise during operation.

A variety of electric sprayers are plunger devices. The emulsion in them is pushed out not by means of air masses, but by means of a piston (plunger). They are very economical.

The paint consumption when using such units is minimal. And there is a minimum of" fog " during the work. Plus, the paint can be taken directly from the bucket through a hose. However, the quality of painting is worse than when using conventional air spray guns.

Separately, you can select battery models with a 1-2 l tank, externally resembling screwdrivers. They are similar in design to electric ones. But the electric pump is started not from the mains, but with the help of a battery.

Inexpensive devices with a power of up to 500 watts belong to household ones. However, the quality of painting is worse for them – the layer is not too uniform. Such models are not suitable for thick and viscous compositions. And the paint tank attached to the gun is not too convenient – the center of gravity in them is shifted. It is better if it is located at the bottom.

Pneumatic

Now let's figure out which spray gun is better air or airless. It is believed that semi-automatic devices, in which air is injected using a pneumatic compressor, provide the best quality of painting. The paint is distributed in a thin layer, evenly. Their performance is also impressive. It can be up to 400 sq. m.

The pneumatic spray gun for water-based paint can be equipped with a built-in or external tank connected with a hose. Its capacity in the latter case is significantly increased from 25 to 600 liters. Such units are more suitable for professional work. For use at home, a tank of 24-50 liters is enough. The average power of pneumatic devices is 0.7-3 kW. The most popular devices are considered to have a capacity of 1.2-1.8 kW.

What characteristics should you pay special attention to?

Regardless of the design and method of spraying, a high-quality electric, pneumatic or manual spray gun for water-based paint must meet the following requirements:

  • be light and as comfortable as possible; the center of gravity should be located in such a way that the tool can be held in the hand for a long time without visible tension;
  • the sprayer can be turned easily, without effort, so that the painter has the opportunity to change the direction of the jet as quickly as possible;
  • the trigger is pressed gently, with little resistance;
  • the working components of the tool (nozzle and locking needle) are made of wear-resistant materials with anti-corrosion properties; the ideal option is devices with an aluminum body and a nickel coating or a stainless steel and brass body;
  • since the water-based emulsion refers to viscous paints, the size of the nozzle should be sufficient for its passage;
  • a pneumatic spray gun for paint with a lower tank will cost less, but it is not too convenient to work with; so that it does not "spit" the solution, it will always have to be held vertically;
  • it is desirable that the sprayer is equipped with sealing Teflon gaskets; they will last much longer than conventional rubberized ones;
  • the density and viscosity of the water-based emulsion can be different, so the nozzle size must be adjusted; the optimal diameter is 1.4-1.7 mm; removable 6-7 mm nozzles will be needed for applying the putty;
  • the spray gun should be easy to disassemble and assemble for washing.

When purchasing a sprayer, it is better to focus on models from well-known manufacturers. Hammer, Bosch, Wagner Projectpro, Aspro products are considered the best spray guns for painting walls and ceilings. Russian manufacturers also have good products: Patriot, Caliber, Fiolent, Bison.

The quality of spraying largely depends on the shape of the nozzles and needles, their diameter. It will be possible to check them only in the work. Therefore, it is hardly worth buying a too cheap device. Its optimal pressure should be 4-6 atm. At high power, the paint consumption will be increased. If it is below 2.0 atm., the quality of the coating will be far from ideal.

Choosing a spray gun for water-based paint

When choosing a spray gun, you need to look up to brands, take into account the budget and follow certain rules. It is important to take a closer look at the material from which the spray gun body is made. Aluminum structures, the surface of which is treated with a coating that prevents the appearance of corrosion, will last longer. Plastic aggregates, despite their low weight (and this increases comfort during operation), break down faster.

Before buying, it is better to check the sealing gaskets. Teflon elements are more suitable, because they are able to resist the solvents that are part of the paints. A corroded gasket will lead to leaks and reduce productivity. If the type of device involves painting under high pressure, then the seals should cope with their task.

A container for paintwork made of metal is easier to wash, but it complicates the control of consumption. Barrels made of nylon do not have this disadvantage, but they are more difficult to wash after painting. A manual spray gun in case of one-time household work is more suitable, since it is unprofitable to pay more and take a compressor unit.

Operating rules of the device

The use of a spray gun for water-based paint should be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations specified in the passport. It must necessarily contain a mark on the admission of working with viscous water-based paint:

  • to obtain a uniform coating, it is necessary that the torch captures 50% of the already painted surface;
  • it is placed at a distance of 15-20 cm from the wall or ceiling at a right angle; if it is displaced, smudges will form;
  • coloring is performed in square sections with the length of the sides equal to the length of the arm; the paint is applied as quickly as possible in circular (transverse and longitudinal) movements;
  • water-based paint for painting the ceiling or walls with a spray gun is always diluted slightly thinner than when using a brush or roller;
  • if debris or poorly mixed lumps get into the paint, the treated area may swell; to avoid this, it is better to pass the paint through a filter or gauze;
  • the application of the second layer is allowed 2 hours after the application of the first, that is, complete drying;
  • at the end of the work, the tool is disassembled and washed; the remains of the water emulsion must be drained into a separate container.

The technology of painting the ceiling with a spray gun

Professional ceiling painting with a compressor will cost$ 3 per square meter. But if you have the opportunity to buy or rent such a device, then it is not difficult to carry out all the work yourself. The video at the end of the article will help you clearly understand how the ceiling is painted with a spray gun. Our step-by-step instructions for painting the ceiling surface with a spray gun will also help in the work.

Preparation of the premises

The ceiling surface is cleaned of old finishes. Whitewash is washed off with water or soap solution. The wallpaper is wetted and after soaking, cleaned off with a spatula. The water-based emulsion is washed off, and moisture-resistant paints are removed with a special wash.

After that, the ceiling is washed and allowed to dry. With the help of putty, all holes, cracks are sealed and irregularities are eliminated. After drying the putty composition, the surface is sanded with sandpaper. Before painting, the ceiling is treated with a deep penetration primer. The solution is applied in two layers, followed by drying of each of them.

Tools and materials for work

To work, prepare the following materials and tools:
  • stepladder or scaffolding;
  • paint tray;
  • coloring mixture;
  • masking tape;
  • spray gun;
  • plastic film;
  • roller and brush for painting skirting boards;
  • protective glasses, a respirator and gloves.

Preparation of paint for a spray gun

Before using the spray gun, it is necessary to evaluate the viscosity of the paint, since too thick compositions will clog the device. If the coloring mixture is thick, then solvents are added to it. Distilled water is suitable for dissolving water-based paint. Ordinary water is not used for this, because it forms a white coating on the painted surface.

To dilute oil paints, white spirit, drying oils and oil-resin lacquers are used. Enamels are brought to the desired consistency by adding white spirit, xylene, solvent, solvents or gasoline.

After that, the prepared coloring mixture is filtered through gauze, folded in several layers. This is necessary in order to get rid of small debris and lumps that can clog the nozzle of the device.

The technique of applying paint to the ceiling

Before painting the ceiling, take out all the furniture from the room, and cover what is left and the floor with plastic wrap. Seal the unpainted surfaces with masking tape.

Painting the ceiling with a spray gun with water-based paint takes place in the following sequence:

  1. The first layer of paint is applied in the direction perpendicular to the window opening in the room. Keep the device at a distance of 30-50 cm from the surface to be painted. Move it at a speed of 1 m/5 sec. The paint jet should be directed perpendicular to the ceiling.
  2. Conditionally divide the ceiling into separate sections and paint alternately. Do not stay long in one area, otherwise streaks and drops will form.
  3. After drying the first layer of the coloring composition, a second layer is applied. In this case, the direction is changed to mutually perpendicular (along the window openings).

The video will tell you about how the ceiling is painted with water-based paint with a spray gun:

Spray gun from an old vacuum cleaner

It is better if it is old, made in the USSR. After all, the hose in such a vacuum cleaner is connected not only to the inlet, but also to the outlet pipes. It will only be necessary to change the direction of the thrust, that is, the poles of the terminals connected to the motor and stator.

  1. A 2-liter bottle with a wide neck is used as a container. For it, you should cut out the cork from the foam.
  2. 2 tubes from a ballpoint pen or a medical dropper will be inserted into it – one for air intake, the second for paint supply.
  3. The third small hole will be auxiliary. It will help to discharge the air while reducing the volume of the solution in the bottle.
  4. The second plug is inserted between the sprayer and the vacuum cleaner hose.

You can treat small areas with a sprayer made from a bicycle pump, to which an aerosol can from the used deodorant is attached. Any plastic bottle can serve as a container for paint. The air is injected through a nipple cut from the bicycle chamber.

How to make a spray gun with your own hands

At the end of the twentieth century, paint spray nozzles were popular, which were sold in kits with vacuum cleaners. The old units had both suction and discharge pipes, which made them universal. The nozzle was put on the jar, connected to the hose attached to the discharge pipe and all that remained to be done was to close the empty hole in the lid. The design is ingenious and simple, so it will not be difficult to reproduce it.

  • the feeding tube is soldered into the plastic lid for the jar, to which the discharge tube is attached at an angle of 90 degrees, equipped with an adapter for the vacuum cleaner hose;
  • to control the pressure, a hole is made in the lid, which acts as a kind of pressure reducing valve;
  • if the vacuum cleaner does not have an air injection function, you can make it work in reverse thrust mode by rearranging the terminals responsible for the operation of the rotor and stator.

Spray gun from the compressor from the refrigerator

Such a design is more complex:

  • The compressor itself should be removed from the refrigerator, as well as the starting relay, by sawing the copper tubes on the metal with a hacksaw.
  • The unit is attached to a reliable base, for example, a wooden board.
  • To determine the direction of the air supply, you will need to connect the power supply. The tube intended for air supply is connected to the receiver with the help of fittings. For these purposes, it is better to use a silicone sealant.
  • A filter is attached to the suction tube. You can take an old gasoline car.
  • To clean the incoming air from moisture and dust, a diesel filter is installed at the mounting point of the receiver. It is inexpensive, so you should not save on it.

Thus, the choice of the type of sprayer directly depends on the volume of future work. For processing small areas or one - time work, a device with a manual drive or a small electric or battery unit with a capacity of up to 500 watts is quite enough. You can also make it at home.

For professional work, it is better to buy a powerful pneumatic spray gun designed for all types of paint. It will be able to process up to 400 sq. m. within an hour, however, the cost of such a device is quite high.
